Give blood - urgent call for support

Message sent on behalf of NHS Blood and Transplant – Marketing
Recent bad weather led to the cancellation of some blood donation sessions and between 6-7,000 units of blood were lost as a result. This could take weeks to recover and that’s why we need your support.

Despite many donors coming forward, blood stocks are at urgently low levels and there are still appointments to fill at our 23 city and town based permanent Donor Centres to ensure blood stocks don’t drop further before Easter. Current stocks of group O (the universal blood type used in emergencies), group B, and A positive blood are particularly low at the moment.

We are asking those across the NHS who can give blood, to book an appointment at a Donor Centre and help us in the run up to Easter.

To make this as easy as possible for you, I have attached some graphics for you to share through your internal comms channels, whether that’s on your intranet, internal social network or emails. These graphics should be accompanied with the following copy:

Make and keep your appointment by calling the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk -

Bowel cancer awareness month

April is bowel cancer awareness month, a fantastic annual opportunity which we support to raise awareness of bowel cancer and promote local services and progammes.

If you or your family or friends are aged 60-74, you will be receiving an invitation to take part in Bowel Cancer Screening. This is a bi- annual invitation and the test kit that will be sent to your home takes just minutes to complete. If you are aged 55 and live in Sefton, Liverpool, St Helen’s or certain parts of Warrington, you will be invited for a Bowel Scope (flexible sigmoidoscopy), this test only takes a matter of minutes to complete in most cases.

These tests are designed to detect cancer early, before there are any obvious signs. Caught early there is a 90% chance of survival. In addition to this for every 300 patients that we scope at Aintree we will prevent 2 from getting cancer and we will detect polyps in one patient and be able to save their life.

Please encourage family, friends and colleagues and patients in these age groups to accept the invitation to take part in screening.

For further information please contact the Bowel Cancer Screening Team on 0151 529 0513.
